The Conte effect: Tottenham emerge as frontrunners to land Inter Milan standout


Word stemming from the Italian media over the last 24 hours has pointed towards Tottenham Hotspur as a potential landing spot for Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij.

Conte arrives

An exciting and potentially prosperous new era of course got underway on the Lilywhite half of north London earlier this month.

On the back of the dismissal of summer hire Nuno Espirito Santo, those in a position of power at Spurs went all out in their search for a long-term solution to the ongoing woes on the club’s bench.

In nevertheless came as something of a surprise, though, when Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy managed to strike a deal for one of the continent’s most highly-regarded tacticians, in the form of Antonio Conte.

The Italian, in turn, has since overseen a trio of outings on the Tottenham bench, bagging two wins and a draw, including a first Premier League triumph over Leeds United on Sunday evening.

Inter star eyed

The Conte effect at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, may not be restricted solely to an immediate upturn in results.

This comes with word stemming from the Italian media on Monday pointing towards a potentially major coup on the transfer front following the turn of the year.

The player being eyed by Spurs? Stefan de Vrij.

As per a report from Calciomercato, the capital outfit are at the front of the queue when it comes to clubs keen on the signature of Dutch stopper de Vrij.

Inter Milan, for their part, are understood to be coming around to the idea of parting with the 29-year-old, whose current terms at the San Siro are due to expire in the summer of 2023.

In turn, should the two parties indeed decide to part ways, Conte’s pull is viewed as a likely substantial one, with de Vrij having played a central role in the Nerazzurri’s Serie A triumph last season, under the watch of the now-Spurs boss.
