Former Chelsea keeper Willy Caballero makes Edouard Mendy claim Blues fans will love

Edouard Mendy’s Chelsea stint

Chelsea have made a number of big signings over the last year or so.

All of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku have been brought into the club for fairly large fees.

Perhaps Chelsea’s best bit of business over the last few windows, however, has come in the form of Edouard Mendy.

The 29-year-old was signed from Stade Rennais for a fee believed to be around £21m.

Mendy has since gone on to usurp Kepa Arrizabalaga as the Blues’ no.1, whilst putting on some starring displays in the process.

Chelsea have won the Champions League with Mendy as their no.1 and now have the best defensive record in the Premier League so far this term, with Mendy clearly a big reason why.

Edouard Mendy the best in the world?

Now, after another impressive showing for Chelsea over the weekend, Mendy has received high praise from a former teammate.

Willy Caballero joined Chelsea in 2017 and would leave on a free this past summer, giving him a chance to work up close with Mendy.

And now, the Argentine has voiced his opinion that Mendy is the best goalkeeper in the world – at least over the last year:

“I believe strongly that Ed Mendy is the best goalkeeper [in the world] – last year and at the moment this year he is the best.

“As he arrived last season in training I saw an amazingly talented goalkeeper in terms of power, in terms of speed – he is so fast when diving,” he explained.

“He has very long arms and everyone wants that as a goalkeeper. He is showing in every single game that he is calm and he is improving with his feet, he is playing very well in the build-up.

“He is winning points for Chelsea – not just last season but this season too. He is enjoying performing at this level and keeping clean sheets.”

The Argentine added:

“I spoke with him last season and I told him ‘For me you are the best goalkeeper at the moment but you have to keep doing it for longer – next season and next season and next season’,” he explained.

“‘Because you have only shown for one season what you are able to do’ – and he is doing really well.”
