West Ham target a forward and defender in January reinforcement plan

Hammers hot on the tail of Adam Hložek

West Ham are performing above and beyond the wildest dreams of even the most ardent support that consume the London Stadium as David Moyes’ Hammers are in the thick of the fight at the top of the table, currently sitting level with Manchester City in second and just three points behind table-topping Chelsea.

The Hammers are also on course to top their Europa League group and make a push for major honors on two fronts at the minute, but to have any realistic chance of not puttering out in the latter stages of the season they will need reinforcements for the first-team and that is precisely what the club are pushing for come January.

According to 90min Football writer Toby Cudworth, West Ham is hopeful that their strong connections to the Czech Republic can land them arguably the nation’s brightest talent in AC Sparta Praha starlet Adam Hložek.

The 19-year-old forward burst onto the scene when he made his debut for the Czech giants at the age of 16, setting the record as the youngest player to ever appear for the club. He is coming off a strong 2020-21 campaign that saw him hit 15-goals in 19-league appearances, and West Ham is ready to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Juventus for his services.

With the club now 27% owned by Czech billionaire and EPH majority owner Daniel Křetínský – who has a view to taking full ownership of the club – the Hammers could have a clear line of sight to secure a loan move for Hložek with an obligation to buy the youngster in the summer given Křetínský’s status as co-owner and president of Sparta.

Any deal for Hložek would offer badly-needed depth behind key center forward Michail Antonio. Though Hložek shines from the left flank, he is fully capable of being deployed in a middle, offering additional versatility to a strong yet thin West Ham forward line.

West Ham also in the market for a center-back

While links with a deal for Adam Hložek will undoubtedly capture the imagination, a pragmatic and necessary move for a center-back is also needed to take center stage.

For the moment, West Ham can count on only Kurt Zouma, Craig Dawson, and Issa Diop after an injury to Italian international Angelo Ogbonna, with the need for another name to pad the options on offer in the heart of the defense becoming pressing.

One link that has recently surfaced is interest in Burnley stalwart James Tarkowski who has just six months left on his deal at Turf Moor. But a January move for a defender is of the utmost importance, making a loan move for Hložek and saving January funds for a center-back that much more prudent.

Tarkowski would set the Hammers back £20million, however, and there is no telling if the club will want to spend that amount in the winter despite the need that has surfaced.
