Emerson Royal clarifies comments on former Tottenham manager Nuno Espírito Santo

Emerson Royal thankful for Nuno relationship

Tottenham new boy Emerson Royal took to social media today to clarify recent comments about former boss Nuno Espírito Santo that initially were suspected of being criticisms levied in the direction of the Portuguese.

In a YouTube interview with Pro-DirectSoccer, the former Barcelona and Real Betis right-back made comments about how he was struggling with certain aspects regarding his adaptation to life at Tottenham and in the Premier League after his summer move (quotes via HITC);

“I don’t understand anything. They ask me 50 times and I don’t understand anything. The manager is Portuguese but they don’t translate anything to me because they want me to learn. But some of my teammates translate – Lucas. He translates to me and others who speak Portuguese.

It’s because it’s impossible and there’s some training that I don’t understand what’s going on. They’re talking and I don’t understand it but then I start understanding it by looking at what they’re doing in training and doing the same. But when they explain it, I don’t understand it.”

But the Brazilian international has now gone on record saying his comments were taken out of context, and instead, has spoken positively about Espírito Santo during their short relationship at Tottenham.

Emerson Royal’s comments have now been made clear and show gratitude towards the former Spurs headmaster for helping him to adapt to life in north London by forcing him to learn the language immersively rather than having to translate every word thus failing to challenge the Tottenham summer signing.

Tottenham signing making good on his promise

Though the Nuno Espírito Santo regime did not go as planned at Tottenham, there is renewed hope under new boss Antonio Conte that the club can get back to regularly challenging the upper echelons of English football, and Emerson Royal looks set to remain a key figure in that challenge.

Since his summer arrival, the native of São Paulo has featured in 675 out of a possible 720-minutes of Premier League action while also logging minutes in the Europa Conference League.

Under a manager such as Conte, whose heavy reliance on his full-backs plays a vital tactical role, Royal could be set for even greater responsibility at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium moving forward.

But for a player who was bold in his comments after arriving at the club this summer, Emerson Royal is – so far – making good on his word that he would do what it takes to help the club grow on the pitch.
