Chelsea working on new deal for N’Golo Kante, insight into Blues’ central midfield plans provided

An insight into Chelsea’s plans for their central midfield area going forward has been provided recently.

Chelsea’s midfield

Chelsea currently only use two central midfielders in Thomas Tuchel’s favoured 3-4-3 formation.

But, on paper, it is hard not to argue that the Blues currently have one of the best midfields in the Premier League at present.

N’Golo Kante, when fit, remains one of the best central midfielders in world football. And he is generally partnered with Jorginho, who has been in superb form since Thomas Tuchel took over, playing key roles in both Chelsea’s Champions League success and Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph.

Mateo Kovacic is another central midfielder thriving under Tuchel, though the Croatian’s efforts can sometimes go under the radar.

And, to back up said trio, Chelsea would secure the services of Saul Niguez on loan from Atletico Madrid on deadline day.

The Spaniard’s form had dropped off slightly of late, but that was in part to Diego Simeone often deploying him out of position.

Saul, Kante, Rice & more

Now, as mentioned above, the Evening Standard have provided some insight into Chelsea’s plans for their central midfield area moving forward.

Firstly, despite being 30 and suffering with more injury issues of late, the ES report that the Londoners are working on a new deal for N’Golo Kante, whose current contract runs until 2023.

As for Saul, the Evening Standard claim that Chelsea will sign the Spaniard on a permanent basis if he can rediscover the form that made him one of the most sought-after talents in Europe.

Elsewhere, Declan Rice is said to be a long-standing target for the Blues, who are prioritising midfield and central defence in the next few windows.

Finally, it is added that though they are tracking Rice, they are also monitoring other targets, including Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni.
